Opening Documents with the DjVu Viewer

Opening and viewing DjVu documents is even easier and quicker with the DjVu Viewer included with the DjVu Browser Plug-in. While the DjVu Browser Plug-in is necessary for viewing DjVu documents over a network, such as the Web, the standalone DjVu Viewer enables you to view local DjVu documents (those located on your computer) without using a browser.

Local DjVu files automatically open with the new DjVu Viewer*, but if you are accustomed to opening DjVu files in your Web browser and don’t wish to change your workflow, you can still view them with the Web browser by dragging and dropping them into your browser window.

Viewing with the standalone DjVu Viewer offers the same toolbar and menu options as viewing with a web browser.

To open a local DjVu document with the DjVu Viewer, do one of the following:

• Double-click any DjVu file in your computer’s folder system. DjVu documents usually have the extension “.djvu”.
• From the File menu in your favorite application, choose Open. In the Open dialog box, select a DjVu file, then click OK; Note: If you do not see DjVu files that you know are in the directory, select All Files (*.*) from the “Files of type:” drop-down menu.
• Open an attached DjVu document in an email application as you would open any other attached file. Upon opening a DjVu document, you will be looking at the Viewing Area.

*NOTE: If you already have a previous version when you install DjVu Browser Plug-in 6.1, a dialog box notifies you that DjVu files currently open with another application and asks whether you would like to change this and use DjVu Viewer to open local files. If you click Yes local files will automatically open with the DjVu Viewer, just as they would if you were installing the DjVu Browser Plug-in for the very first time. Click No if you want DjVu files to continue to be opened through your Web browser.
